Description

Locals from Vancouver and Richmond love the respite Iona Beach offers from the bustle of the city. On a mild winter afternoon, the beach was singularly perfect.

Iona Beach is a slender spit of land extending out into the waters of Georgia Strait. From one of the mouths of the Fraser River at the western edge of Richmond, British Columbia. A combination of natural land formation and man-made break water. The Regional Park certainly offers a wonderful respite from city life and a scenic venue for physical fitness. The main breakwater alone offers an eight kilometer round trip for runners and cyclists looking to add the resistance of the coastal winds to their workout.

The beach areas are certainly a great place for a seaside walk and a touch of serenity in the eye of urban chaos. The park is bordered to the north by Kerrisdale and the University of British Columbia. Both are beautiful but bustling locations. To the immediate south is Vancouver International Airport. Above all, the contrast is delightful and refreshing. When I stand out here with my camera, I feel like I am thumbing my nose at the busyness surrounding this oasis.

This shot was taken during my birthday day out with my wife. I loved how all four characters in the photo, the sand, the sea, the sky, and the lone log spoke in tones of serene calm. These are the kinds of places that replenish my soul.

ABOUT BRAD

The Fraser Valley has been my home for more than thirty years. The beauty of this region certainly captured me right from my youth, and exploring the outdoors was the common thread in all my interests. The lakes, rivers, and mountains that define the geography of this area continue to draw me into the backcountry and inspire my photographic pursuits. Even the urban centers of the southern coast of British Columbia are kissed by their intersection with their natural surroundings.

Ironically, photography became an integral part of my life when I left this province to work overseas. The zeal to capture the experience of living in a vibrant foreign city led me to delve into the relatively new realm of digital photography. The ability to capture what I was seeing in a way that expressed how it was making me feel became my artistic passion.

Over the last ten years I have worked to hone my craft both with the camera and the computer. In the field, this is all about finding locations that move me; locations that tell a story. In the post processing, it is all about highlighting the mood and lighting to evoke a response from the viewer. It is my hope that through my work people will be able to share in the sense of wonder I feel in the world around us.

Although all of images are color compatible for viewing online, most computer monitors vary in their color configurations. The images that you see may not have accurate color representation.
