Sitting by a window in the late evening I noticed a hummingbird flutter for a while. Tt seemed to be looking at me. It was strange though as I’d never seen them on this side of the house as there are no flowers. Nor is there a hummingbird feeder over here. After pondering this oddness I decided to go look at the feeder just to make sure and true enough it was empty. I could hardly believe that these little fellows were clever enough to let me know that they needed tending and where to find me even.
They are happy with me so long as I fill the feeder regularly and keep my distance.
It’s just not my right to try cleaning around that part of the sun deck where their feeder is placed. To do so would get me scolded and dive-bombed.
I have had a feeder out all year long for more than twenty five years and have watched new babies being born and plop right out of their tiny little nests and it is indeed magical. Often there are three or four hummingbirds fighting for space around the feeder and they can be noisy little critters.
Hummingbirds are one of my favorite subjects and I love painting them in bright colors as it seems to fit their strong personalities. This one I call ‘Hummer Joe’.
