This yearling grizzly cub was fishing with his mother on the Atnarko River in the Bella Coola Valley. I was there with a group of fellow photographers in 2016 all crammed onto the BC Parks viewing platform. Sometimes you can wait all day for a siting of grizzlies but this sunny day the grizzlies were present on the far shore and we were all happily clicking away. I had lost sight of this cub as he swam to the shore close to the viewing platform until he surfaced about 15 feet in front of me. When you are shooting wildlife, you must be prepared for the unexpected, so I had mere seconds to capture this moment with the sun dancing like stars on the water in front of the cub. We also took boat tours down the river but this was my ‘winning’ image from that trip.
